There is a misconception that all Mac users are zealots, fanApplenatics, or Kool-Aid drinkers.

As a sane Mac user — one that realizes that Apple is far from perfect — I can’t stand being grouped with “Artie MacStrawman“:

Mac users will remember MacStrawman as the Mac user who:

  • Says the Mac is utterly invulnerable to any and all malicious attack.
  • Mindlessly worships Steve Jobs.
  • Blindly buys anything Apple releases no matter how dumb and stupid and dumb it is.
  • Refuses to accept that Windows might be better at anything. Even being Windows.
  • Emails death threats to anyone who disagrees with him.

Most Mac users don’t fit this description. Most realize that, while Apple makes a great product, there are many areas where they fall short of perfection (I personally had terrible issues during the .Mac to MobileMe transition).

This idea of zealotry seems to stem from the mid to late 90’s when Apple was struggling to stay alive and losing millions of dollars each quarter. During those times there were many zealots. Not only did they praise every move that Apple made, they bashed every move Microsoft made. Those times have passed and the stereotype needs to pass as well.

There will always be fringe cases of people who fit the description of Artie on both sides, but I am not one of them.

My name is Aaron and I am an advocate, not an addict.

(Isn’t denial one of the symptoms of addition?)

Office 2010 User Interface

What a convoluted mess of a user interface. I would rather have an application that does one thing well than one that does 100 things poorly. Could they fit any more options into the ribbon?

We will be migrating from Office ‘03 to Office ‘07 in the near future and I am not looking forward to the learning curve for our users. There are a lot of new features, but what good is the confusion of a new interface and slowness from additional bloat when 90% of our users just want to write an email or type a simple text document?

More is not always better.
