ABB Totalflow : An Industrial Brand

Totalflow grew up in the oil fields of Oklahoma making products to measure and analyze the flow of oil and gas. The company was acquired by ABB, a very large technology-based provider of power and automation headquartered in Switzerland in the early 2000s. ABB Totalflow hired Littlefield in 2005 to help build their brand among buyers and influencers in this highly technical field.

We traveled the country in search of buyers of gas measurement and analysis equipment, from Texas to Pennsylvania and on. We sat with these guys – and they are all guys – and listened to them talk about their jobs, their needs, their perceptions. We visited them in their offices and went with them to the field. We learned a lot about the kind of people they are: engineers.

They are a special breed. When asked to simply change a light bulb in a ceiling fan during a party, engineers are highly likely to take the entire fan apart to see how it works. They like puzzles. They like precision. They like to be right.
